Online desk : The state of Manipur is facing lethal circumstances since 3rd May 2023, with riots taking over the state due the ethnic differences amongst the Meitie and Kuki residents of Manipur the entire state is struggling to overcome this nightmare. The two different ethnicities involved in the riots are namely the Meitie community which constitutes almost more than half of Manipur’s population residing mostly in the capital city ‘Imphal’ and the prosperous valleys surrounding it & Kuki community that lives in the surrounding hill districts.
The day following the riots i.e 4th May 2023 , a heinous crime against women belonging to the Kuki community was committed . A video of the incedent has now come forward which shows a group of men groping and assaulting women and escorting them to an empty field . The gruesome act was comitted against a 15 year old young girl , a woman of 21 years of age who was gang raped ( according to the FIR filed by survivors) and a 42 year old woman .
Consequently, the internet services in the state were put on hold to avoid the spread of misinformation and any other controversies , but on 25 July 2023 this ban was lifted with certain restrictions such as inaccessiblities of internet facilities on the mobile phones .
However, the disputes amongst the communities are still continuing with the meitie organisations demanding for ST status. The community has also made claims about facing problems due to a large scale illegal immigration by Mayanmerese and Bangladeshis . On 22nd and 23rd July 2023, 718 people from Myanmar including 209 men , 208 women and 301 children invaded the state from the borders near Churachandpur district. The Myanmar – Manipur border extends upto 398 km out of which mere 10 km has fencing , making it a cake walk for invaders to enter the state. The Assam rifles has been ordered by the government to look into the matter.
