Online desk : During his visit to Silchar today, Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, unveiled an array of ambitious development projects set to transform the Cachar district and the broader Barak Valley region. In an interview, Chief Minister Sarma expressed his commitment to the area’s progress and shared several significant announcements.
Sarma began by highlighting the success of the Jal Jeevan scheme, revealing that 75 new water supply facilities have been inaugurated. These facilities are expected to play a pivotal role in fostering development within the Cachar district. One of the most noteworthy announcements was the creation of four new sub-divisions within the Cachar district: Borkhola, Kathigora, Sonai, and Dholai. This move is aimed at bringing government services and administration closer to the local population, making them more accessible and responsive.
In a political development, Sarma hinted at the potential joining of Dilip Paul, a prominent local figure, to the BJP. This could have significant implications for the political landscape in the region.
Sarma also addressed the convenience of government services, announcing a renovation project for the District Collector’s office, which is expected to streamline administrative processes and improve public service delivery.
Acknowledging the contentment of Barak Valley residents with the recent delimitation of seats, Sarma expressed openness to discussions regarding the region’s autonomy, indicating a willingness to engage in dialogue on this matter.
The Chief Minister then shifted the spotlight to infrastructure development, promising better roads for Silchar. He revealed plans for several significant projects, including a 3km elevated corridor from Ramnagar to Trunk Road, a 1km flyover in the sinking zone of Ramnagar, and a 2.3km flyover from Capital Point to Ranighat. Additionally, a new bridge will be constructed in Mathuraghat. Sarma also emphasized the forthcoming collaboration with Tata Corporation on a cancer hospital and the commencement of work on a super-specialty medical college by year-end. Notably, a 500-bedded hospital within the medical college is slated for inauguration by April.
In the realm of education, the Chief Minister announced that G.C College would be elevated to university status within the year, underscoring the government’s dedication to enhancing educational opportunities in the region.
